Co-Producing Public Safety: Communities, Law Enforcement, and Public Health Researchers Work to Prevent Crime Together

Last month, the COPS Office, the California Endowment, and the Center for Court Innovation (CCI) released Co-Producing Public Safety: Communities, Law Enforcement, and Public Health Researchers Work to Prevent Crime Together. Many jurisdictions are seeking ways to prevent violence through a multidisciplinary approach, treating it as a public health issue as well as a crime problem. The COPS Office, CCI, and the California Endowment hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Spreading a Cure for Crime.” Law enforcement executives, public health professionals, and others sat around the table discussing co-producing public safety and recommendations for moving forward. Some of the recommendations that came out of the discussion include the following:

  • Learning. Ensuring that as new law enforcement strategies are introduced, they have buy-in not only from the command staff but also all the way down to the rank-and-file officers and civilian staff, structuring law enforcement agencies like teaching hospitals.
  • Data. Collaboration is important, but to help better use the collaboration, information sharing is critical.
  • Community knowledge. Law enforcement agencies need to know the different cultures and groups within the community.
