Did you know?

Julius CaesarStress is everywhere these days, and if your job is in law enforcement you also know that stress can kill—either yourself, or someone around you. Stress can not only cause depression and distract people from what's important, it can contribute to major health problems, all of which will impact your entire agency through a decline in productivity and success. So how should stress be handled in your agency? Here are a few tips for the top executives on down to front-line officers:

  • Share information with employees to reduce uncertainty about their jobs and futures. With today's uncertain economy, worry about one's paycheck or job security can really ratchet up the stress level.
  • Make communication friendly and efficient, not mean-spirited or petty. When used appropriately, humor is a great way to relieve stress in the workplace. When you or those around you start taking things too seriously, find a way to lighten the mood by sharing a joke or funny story.
  • Give workers opportunities to participate in decisions that affect their jobs. Help them analyze their schedules, responsibilities, and daily tasks. All work and no play is a recipe for burnout. Try to find a balance between work and family life, social activities and solitary pursuits, daily responsibilities and downtime.
  • Provide opportunities for social interaction among employees. Developing friendships with co-workers can help buffer your employees from the negative effects of stress. Remember to listen to them and offer support when they are in need as well.
  • Establish a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. Bullying isn't only happening to children, so teach your employees by showing that everyone is on the same team, with the same goals, and should be treated with dignity and respect.
  • Be there for somebody. In some situations, simply sharing your thoughts and feelings with someone you trust can help reduce stress. Talking over a problem with someone who is both supportive and empathetic can be a great way to let off steam and relieve stress.
