The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has announced the availability of several resources intended to help law enforcement, business owners, and citizens prevent the occurrence of common crimes and disorder issues that become more prevalent during the holiday season.

The COPS Holiday Safety Toolkit contains practical guidebooks that address issues such as check and credit card fraud, robberies at automated teller machines, identity theft, theft of and from cars in parking facilities, drunk driving, shoplifting, burglaries of retail establishments, and burglaries from single family homes. The guidebooks are available as a package that covers all of these topics, or individually by those with interest in a specific subject.

"During the holiday season many communities experience a spike in certain types of crimes that are related to increased shopping and spending patterns and less cautious behavioral patterns,” said COPS Director Carl R. Peed. “COPS has developed resources to help address these types of crimes, and we are pleased to offer them in one convenient package this holiday season.”

The COPS Office is a federal agency responsible for advancing community policing nationwide and supporting state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies. Since 1995, COPS has invested $12.4 billion to advance community policing, including grants awarded to more than 13,000 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to fund the hiring of more than 117,000 officers and provide a variety of knowledge resource products including publications, training, technical assistance, conferences and webcasts.
