Please join the Department of Justice (DOJ) Civil Rights Division on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern time for a conversation about the DOJ Law Enforcement Language Access Initiative (LELAI). LELAI is a nationwide effort to assist law enforcement agencies in meeting their obligations to provide meaningful language assistance to individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP).

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke will be joined by panelists from the U.S. Attorney’s Offices in the Eastern District of New York and the District of Colorado; the chief of the Denver Police Department; the sheriff for Brown County, Wisconsin; and the Director of the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office).

“Providing law enforcement agencies with the tools they need to ensure effective and meaningful language access promotes and advances greater safety for people with limited English proficiency,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke.

During this virtual conversation, participants will hear from law enforcement agencies that have worked with the DOJ to improve their ability to communicate with people with LEP. Panelists will also share strategies for overcoming language barriers by developing technical assistance resources and tools; affirmatively engaging with the community and law enforcement; and strengthening ties among law enforcement agencies, communities with LEP, and other stakeholders.

Who should attend?

The intended participants in this webinar are state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies interested in successful approaches to overcoming language barriers. This includes command staff charged with drafting agency-wide language access policies, senior personnel who provide training (for both new cadets and current officers), community relations officers, and anyone interested in resources and tools to help law enforcement communicate and engage with people who do not speak English.
