The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) is pleased to announce the launch of a new resource for law enforcement—LEDTAtraining.org. This initiative of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is part of the implementation of the Law Enforcement De-escalation Training Act of 2022 (LEDTA), which aims to enhance law enforcement’s ability to respond safely and effectively to critical situations.

Under LEDTA, the DOJ is responsible for identifying and developing effective training curricula for law enforcement officers and mental health professionals. These curricula focus on critical areas, including the following:

• Employing de-escalation tactics and alternatives to use of force
• Safely responding to individuals in mental health or behavioral crises, including those with disabilities
• Successfully participating on a crisis intervention team
• Making referrals to community-based mental and behavioral health services, housing assistance programs, public benefits programs, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and other services

In addition, the DOJ is expected to establish a certification process for training programs offered by public and private entities—ensuring they meet rigorous, evidence-informed standards.

The launch of LEDTAtraining.org by the National Policing Institute marks a major milestone in this effort. The site will serve as the central hub for submitting, reviewing, and approving law enforcement de-escalation training curricula, with the public submission process launching in 2026. Visitors will also find an interactive library of evidence-informed and best-practice tools and resources for law enforcement, community members, and other stakeholders seeking to enhance policies, training, and practices related to de-escalation and crisis response. For training organizations, the site provides critical information on preparing curricula for review and other process-related questions.

KAs the certification process advances, LEDTAtraining.org will expand to include a catalog of approved curricula vetted by subject-matter experts through a standards-based assessment process, making it easier for agencies to access high-quality de-escalation and crisis response training.
