The Office of Community Policing Services (COPS Office) of the U.S. Department of Justice has just made professional public safety training easier and more accessible than ever before with the launch of the COPS Training Portal Mobile App.

Powered by the National Center for Policing Innovation (NCPI) and available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, the training portal app provides instant access to the tools law enforcement professionals need to make an impact in their community through unlimited access to no-cost, on-demand multimedia learning content.

Designed to support the professional development of individual public safety practitioners, law enforcement organizations and their partners, and training academies, the app provides 24/7 access to interactive online training and public safety resources on cell phones, laptops, and tablets.

All the eLearning courses on the portal app are free and available to anyone, from community members interested in public safety to entire law enforcement organizations. What’s more, there is no limit to the number of personnel within an organization who may benefit from them.

Though most of the eLearning courses are best suited for individual professional development, the content on the portal may be used in a variety of ways. Resources can be shared and instructional materials in video format can be used in roll calls or other departmental trainings.

Instant Access to Self-Paced Learning, Personal Instruction, and Valuable Resources

The COPS Mobile Training Portal App provides instant access to the information and learning available through the COPS Training Portal anytime, anywhere, on any digital device.

E-Learning: The portal provides convenient access to 45 interactive online training courses and resources in subjects ranging from Crime Reduction Enforcement and Prevention Strategies to a Campus Safety Training Program for Behavioral Intervention Teams. Individuals can work at their own pace, and organizations can deploy training on a schedule that works for them.

In-Person Training: Learners can find the on-site or classroom training they want through a list of organizations funded by the COPS Office for training development and delivery. Each organization provides information regarding registration and scheduling on its individual website, which can be reached through the link on the app.

Resources At Your Fingertips: The COPS Training Portal and its app also serve as a gateway to a variety of multimedia public safety resources which are constantly expanded and updated. Users enjoy no-cost, easy access to case studies, scenarios, interactive publications, training videos, visuals, and simulation-based activities to supplement training or support programs and organizational strategies.

Benefitting Thousands of Individuals, Agencies, and Organizations
Expert Guidance, Resources, and Training

The COPS Office’s Learning Partners, which include numerous subject matter experts and organizations such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the National Association of School Resource Officers, ensure that training materials and resources are of the highest quality.

Covering a wide variety of today’s public safety concerns, the portal provides the most current information and instruction on subjects such as these:

  • Community Policing
  • Crime Prevention
  • Crisis Response
  • Drug Awareness & Enforcement
  • Leadership
  • Officer Wellness & Safety
  • Policing Technology
  • Tribal Policing
  • Youth Safety

Trusted by law enforcement professionals throughout the nation, the COPS Training Portal has been used by officers at more than 8,000 law enforcement organizations since its launch in 2018. In addition, more than 50,000 individuals have registered accounts with the portal and more than 100,000 courses have been completed.

Speaking of the portal’s impact, COPS Office Director Hugh T. Clements, Jr. noted that e-learning courses accounted for more than two-thirds of the individuals trained by the COPS Office in 2023, and that more and more agencies are now using the portal to train large numbers of people.

The COPS Office is pilot testing a way for supervisors to assign courses and track course completion within their agencies. To benefit individual users as well, the COPS Office is working with several state training boards to track training for preapproved e-learning courses, reducing the amount of paperwork officers need to secure in-service training credit.

Director Clements also expressed pleasant surprise at the huge number of non–law enforcement learners using the portal, saying that this enables outside stakeholders to get a better understanding of how and why law enforcement officers and their agencies do their work, encouraging better dialogue, stronger partnerships, and greater collaboration.

Emphasizing the COPS Office’s ongoing commitment to expanding and enhancing the Training Portal, he added “We will continue to heavily invest in it by adding new courses and resources on topics important to law enforcement, to provide new opportunities for learning long into the future. The portal is now and will remain a cornerstone of the COPS Office training and technical assistance portfolio.”
