The COPS Training Portal, the COPS Office’s free online, on-demand training platform, reached new heights in 2025, surpassing 150,000 course enrollments during the summer and partnering with law enforcement agencies across the nation to support their training needs. Currently boasting 39 trainings and around a dozen other resources on topics ranging from traffic safety and impaired driving enforcement to crisis response, community policing to youth, and campus safety, the Portal reaches tens of thousands of law enforcement officers, professional staff, and stakeholders across the country. With more than two dozen new and veteran learners joining each day, the Portal proves its value to the law enforcement field every day.

Individual officers can access training on their own schedules to improve their skills and knowledge on a wide range of topics. Criminal justice agencies (including police and sheriff’s departments, probation/parole agencies, and standards boards) can access not only training resources, but also free tools to register, enroll, and track training completions for their officers and deputies, decreasing time, effort, and costs. Departments across the country use these tools to improve their officers’ training, with new agencies jumping in to take advantage of these no-cost opportunities all the time. Today could be the day your department joins as well!

Officers and agencies in Georgia are the newest beneficiaries of the COPS Training Portal’s nationwide push to partner with standards and training boards for in-service credit for Portal courses. The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (GA POST) now provides from 0.5 to six hours of in-service credit for all COPS Training Portal certificate-issuing courses. Eleven courses additionally qualify for Governor’s Initiative credit, nine in Community Policing and two in De-escalation. Officers who wish to receive credit for taking courses on the Portal must enter their Officer Key (O-Key) in their profile; after that, the Portal team takes care of the rest, submitting monthly reports to GA POST. Credit was available for any approved course taken after January 1, 2025 for officers who added their O-Key prior to the end of 2025. Take advantage in 2026 and get your in-service hours completed on your schedule and at your pace.

State standards organizations interested in partnering or approving courses are encouraged to reach out. Free, engaging, and timely training is available to help your state’s officers improve their understanding of key topics; making sure they receive credit for their hard work will encourage them to embrace new training opportunities.
