What’s New in Blue Video Series

Pictured: Lt. Brody Young, Utah Division of Parks and Recreation Law Enforcement Ranger
Initially inspired by the approach used for TED Talks, What’s New in Blue is a series of short videos produced by the COPS Office to keep viewers informed about innovative developments and critical issues in law enforcement. The episodes feature informative discussions about ideas worth spreading throughout American policing in a format useful for viewing in roll call and training classes or sharing with colleagues and across social media.

The first of this season’s new episodes features Brody Young, a Utah state parks law enforcement ranger who was shot nine times and left to die in a remote location and is back on the job today. Ranger Young speaks candidly about the incident, his recovery, professional resilience, and how the experience has changed his life. Watch the episode here.

New episodes of What’s New in Blue will be released monthly. Previous episodes are also available, addressing topics such as women in policing, law enforcement use of drones, officer suicide prevention, tourniquet use, heart disease among officer, and drug-endangered children. Ranger Young has also recorded an episode of The Beat, which can be listened to here.

The Beat Podcast Series

At heart, Mike Chitwood is a hard-charging cop who got his start chasing criminals through Philadelphia’s subway system and now serves as the elected Sheriff of Volusia County, Florida. He is a dichotomy, viewed equally as a reformer and as someone whose style and results endear him to traditionalists. Sheriff Chitwood joins The Beat to discuss his unyielding approach toward fighting crime, strategic improvements being implemented in his agency, effective community engagement, and contemporary issues in policing.
