COPS Interoperable Communications Technology Program

The COPS Interoperable Communications Technology Program provides funding to help communities develop effective interoperable communications systems for public safety and emergency services providers. Interoperable Communications Technology grants fund projects that explore uses of equipment and technologies to increase interoperability among the law enforcement, fire service, and emergency medical service communities. These projects are the result of thorough planning and demonstrate how new technologies and operating methods can help communities achieve interoperability. To date, COPS has awarded more than $250 million to 65 communities to improve their interoperable communications systems.

In fiscal year 2006, the COPS Office awarded $8.8 million to three law enforcement agencies to address the growing need for interoperable communications technology. Each agency is required to provide a 25 percent match of the federal funds.
