ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN ASHCROFT APPOINTS CARL PEED TO BE THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF COPS

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Attorney General John Ashcroft today appointed Carl Peed to be the Director of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).

"Carl is a strong leader," said Attorney General John Ashcroft. "He did a fine job running the Juvenile Justice agency in Virginia, and I know he will lead the COPS office with the same integrity and energy."

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is the federal office responsible for advancing community policing. COPS promotes community policing through a variety of initiatives:

Peed served as the Director of Juvenile Justice for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 2000 to the present. As the leader of a statewide agency, Peed managed 2,700 employees and a $237 million budget. He was responsible for developing policy and providing administrative oversight for 38 regional offices and over 110 local and state facilities.

Prior to his work for the state of Virginia, Peed served as the Sheriff of Fairfax County, Virginia for 10 years. He was elected to office three times beginning in 1990. As Sheriff, Peed led a work force of 560 employees and managed a $35 million budget. He developed professional policies that received national and international recognition. He introduced new technologies to the criminal justice system.

From 1974 to 1990, Peed worked in the Office of the Sheriff in Fairfax County. From 1972 to 1974, Peed was the Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Peed also served as a Presidential Honor Guard in the United States Army at Fort Meyers in Virginia.

Peed has served as a consultant to the National Sheriff's Association, the American Correctional Association and the US Department of Justice. He has also testified as an expert witness in Federal Court, the US Congress and the Virginia General Assembly.
