Myth #1: One laptop in the field equals one person. This type of technology saves time, which allows for the redeployment of current officers into community policing. Although laptops can certainly make officers more efficient and effective in their jobs, the COPS Office does not require that one officer be redeployed for each laptop awarded.
Myth #2: You can hire officers with COPS MORE grants. The purpose of the COPS MORE program is to expand the time available for community policing by current law enforcement officers. These grants can be used to purchase technology and equipment, and to hire support staff including civilian personnel. Funds for the salary and benefits of a sworn officer may be requested under the Universal Hiring Program (UHP) and/or COPS in Schools program.
Myth #3: Every minute saved must be applied toward community policing. Grants awarded under COPS MORE must result in actual increases in the number of officers deployed in community policing. The COPS Office does not require grantees to redeploy officers into community policing for every minute saved as a direct result of the COPS MORE grant, but agencies must significantly enhance community policing philosophies and activities.
