Course Description:The goal of the training, Public Safety De-Escalation Tactics for Military Veterans in Crisis, is to build skills and capacity among public safety personnel to respond to military veterans (all branches), with a special awareness of those service members who have been deployed in their military career. 15 one-day regional instructor-led trainings will focus on awareness and tactics for public safety personnel who may encounter crisis situations that result from veteran re-integration. The training will include identification of mental illness and behavioral disorders, causal factors of military veteran stress-related conditions, converging conditions that may indicate higher risk for stress-related disorders (conditions that indicate high risk for stress-related disorders and difficulty adjusting to civilian life), officer safety principles to offset increased risk that may be encountered by public safety personnel negotiating or de-escalating crisis involving military veterans, and operational use of de-escalation techniques (based on case studies of successful applications).
